Thanks Dee Zone for your input. I agree that I don't have a very good definition of "a slow learner" but I am quite sure that it exists as a separate phenomenon and I'm also sure that it is a lot commoner than suspected as well as being an exacerbating factor for some of the kids who actually are diagnosed with other disorders that really should not be overall making them lag behind in learning generally.

Thanks for clarifying things. You make several interesting points. Not sure if I agree with your definition of slow learner.

We believe that there is an as yet unclassified disorder (or group of disorders) that results in children being slower at learning than their peers. This is most noticeable when there are no otherwise identifiable disorders yet the child is slower at learning. In our experience sometimes there will be no identifiable disorder but there does seem to be an increased correlation with Dyspraxia than with ADHD or Dyslexia in these kids. There may also be some indication (as yet difficult to pin down with our limited sample sizes) with Dyscalculia in these kids. As mentioned in the article, there could also be signs of a problem in visual-motor testing but often without frank dyslexia.

This is our experience and it is an area that we are working on. One major problem, of course, is to detect such a disorder in kids who do have noticeable deficits and who do fit into one of the standard categories. e.g. could the slow learning be adequately accounted for by the Dyslexia alone (in a known dyslexic) or is there a synergy involved?

I agree with your general sentiment that in many cases children with Dyslexia or ADHD may not be slow learners at all and I think a careful reading of what I stated should convince you that that was not what I meant.

On what are you basing your conclusions about the definitions about slow learners? People with ADHD and dyslexia are often anything but slow learners. Dyslexia does inhibited reading and language skills but not other areas of learning.
