IGNWS Animal Census 2007

24 01 2007

This year’s survey was announced rather suddenly today. Under the aegis of the Ponnvandu Foundation we have been asked to provide volunteers. Lion Tailed Macaques (LTM – Macaca silenus) will be surveyed on Thursday the 25th of January, Nilgiri Tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) on the 29th, carnivores from the 2nd to the 9th of february and elephants in Feb’s 3rd week.

Anyone who wants to participate can contact me with their details ASAP!!!

The Tahr and the LTM are very highly endangered species and one has to trek to really deep forest to get a chance to see them.

Great trekking and a ‘few in a lifetime’ chance to see two of the world’s most endangered species and to contribute to their conservation – could anyone ask for more?

Until 2005, it was placed with the Himalayan Tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) and the Arabian Tahr (Arabitragus jayakari) in the genus Hemitragus. However, Ropiquet & Hassanin (2005) placed it in a new genus Nilgiritragus, because it is genetically more similar to members of the genus Ovis (sheep) than to other tahrs. (wikipedia)

The response from volunteers was very very encouraging and we were able to send folks to some of the other ranges of forest that usually end up getting left out for lack of people. Keep it up please for the next count starting on 2nd.

A couple of you have mailed me but have not given their contact info. I’ve mailed you back but if you didn’t see that then do send in some contact info so that I can give you the details… my email address is in the footer, way down below!

The forests are securely shut down for the next couple of months till the monsson rains reduce the risk of fires. However, we will be continuing with the bird censuses throughout this year to complete the checklist of species for the Topslip (Ullandy) Range so I will surely let you know when the next one is on!
